RFID-Guided Video System Gives Equestrians Their Best Shot

At New Jersey's Rhythm and Blues Stables, riders and trainers view their performance on the arena's big screen, with the optimum camera angle displayed at all times.

By Claire Swedberg, RFID Journal

Aug. 28, 2007—Typically, horse trainers and riders use mirrors situated around an arena to visually check the performance of their horses and themselves during practices. Trainers and riders often bring a friend to the arena to capture video footage, which they can later watch and analyze. However, at Rhythm and Blues Stables, in Allentown, N.J., riders can observe themselves without ever dismounting.

The stable is currently testing an RFID-based system that allows equestrians to watch themselves practice in arenas via cameras integrated with sensors. Developed by startup company Integrated Equine Technologies, the system consists of Integrated Equine software for controlling camera coverage and recordings, as well as RFID hardware and real-time location system (RTLS) software from Ubisense. The stable's owner, Jason Beck, is also president of Integrated Equine Technologies.

The arena is equipped with two analog video cameras, four Series 7000 Ubisensor RFID interrogators for capturing transmissions from active ultra-wide band (UWB) RFID tags attached to horses or riders, a computer running the Ubisense and Integrated Equine software and a large LCD screen.

RFID Journal Article - RFID Helps Cordes & Simon Document Shipments

The German logistics provider is using a system that integrates bar codes, video surveillance and RFID to track the locations and movements of packages within its warehouse.

By Claire Swedberg

Aug. 24, 2007—Logistics provider Cordes & Simon (COSI), part of German transport network group System Alliance, has installed a tracking system that integrates bar codes, video surveillance and RFID to quickly locate a package while it's still in the company's warehouse or call up recorded images of it after it has left. The company installed the system during the construction of its newest warehouse in Villingen-Schwenningen, in southern Germany, which opened in May, one of six warehouses the company operates.

Surge in production deployments as Ubisense releases world’s first UWB real-time location system certified for use in both US and EU

Taking advantage of common US and EU ultra-wideband (UWB) regulations, Ubisense has developed its new Series 7000 UWB real-time location system (RTLS) for both geographic markets and has now released the product after completing extensive production testing with customers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Cambridge, 20th Aug 2007 – "Production installations of the Ubisense Series 7000 system offer our customers much greater range, lower infrastructure cost and a much lower sensor density than legacy WiFi and active RFID solutions while offering an order of magnitude greater accuracy", observes Udo Rieger, General Manager of eseg, the Germany-based logistics security company. "We have been installing Series 7000 systems at the rate of one production site a week, which is truly amazing in a marketplace littered with failed projects. The Ubisense solution is the first RTLS we have seen that can be installed and in production in our customers’ very large distribution centres in days, enabling them to realise ROI in less than 12 months."

"The feedback from our customers and partners regarding the reliability and increased performance of the new system has been fantastic, so now is the time to make it generally available and to fulfil a growing backlog of production orders", says Richard Green, CEO of Ubisense. “Ours is the first solution which is both FCC- and CE-compliant, and is the first to meet the ETSI EN302500 standard for UWB location systems, enabling us to satisfy growing demand in both Europe and the US.”

Raghu Das, CEO of RFID Industry experts IDTechEx, comments: “With the RTLS market poised to grow significantly, Ubisense’s delivery of production installations is a real beacon for the industry as a whole. I congratulate the Ubisense team on their achievements and will watch them with interest as their customers realise enormous productivity gains through use of their system."

Cordes & Simon in production with an integrated video and location system

Providing a step change in quality management - delivered by eseg and Ubisense.

Dortmund – 13. Aug 2007 – Since going into production on 9th July 2007 at their site in Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany, Cordes & Simon, the international logistics company, is able to precisely document the progress of all shipments using an integrated video, bar-code and location system. The solution is able to capture in real-time the status of all goods in the 5,000 m2 facility, providing the capability to present the information related to any shipment at any instant in the past at the press of a button.

"The high precision of the Ubisense real-time location system enables the position of the shipments to be stored to an accuracy of 15cm at the moment they are scanned. This position can then be related to camera pictures, often from several different camera locations, to provide automatically a record of shipment number, time and visual documentation", explains Uwe Knickmeier, the Ubisense project manager.
