New Technologies Help Reduce Storm Restoration Times

Implementing change can be challenging, especially when it involves technology and mission-critical processes like storm damage assessment. You have a process that works; the power always gets restored. But the process could work better and be more efficient; the power could be restored faster. Damage assessment is a critical part of the restoration process and managing it efficiently and effectively benefits you, your crews, and most importantly: your customers.

Watch this quick video about the state of damage assessment today and how new technologies are driving its evolution. In this video, Jay Cadman discusses

  • Why now is the time for change
  • How to start the conversation internally to initiate change
  • The technologies available today that can help improve damage assessment
  • The benefits you can expect to see from improving your damage assessment process

Ubisense Chosen for Fort Bliss Military Operations in Urban Terrain Installation

DENVER – March 7, 2011 – Ubisense announced today that Fort Bliss located in Texas has chosen the Ubisense military training solution to provide precise real-time tracking of personnel and assets, and management of spatial data to enhance the safety and quality of military training at one of its Combined Arms Collective Training Facilities (CACTF).

Ubisense is installing a sensor network throughout a training complex of 25 multi-story buildings that will provide precision tracking in three-dimensions (3-D) throughout the buildings - in rooms, on roof tops and within stairwells.  By combining the General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) Exercise Control (EXCON) and After Action Review (AAR) system with Ubisense’s precision tracking solution, Fort Bliss personnel can track the exact location of all persons inside of the buildings and improve the safety and efficiency of its training exercises.

In addition, the quality of training is enhanced with on-demand generation of AAR reports that provide comprehensive information on an individual’s training performance. And, with Ubisense’s 3-D capabilities, Fort Bliss personnel can simulate a variety of combat scenarios and record and playback all tracking data per individual or group.

Ubisense’s technology has been installed at multiple military training facilities worldwide, such as at the National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin in California.

“Our solution has been stringently evaluated against a number of other location technologies in the military training environment over the past four years and our solution continues to deliver consistent performance, improved training quality and reduced training costs,” said Jay Cadman, Americas vice president of sales & marketing, Ubisense. “For these reasons, Ubisense was the best fit to work in the GDIT environment at Fort Bliss and we are proud of the working we are doing there.”

Ubisense Transit Yard Manager, keeping trains on track

Denver, USA, October 1st 2010. Expanding on their industry leading yard management solution Ubisense has extended its Transit Yard Manager to meet the requirements of rail yards and added the capability to monitor and control maintenance processes.

As its solutions have been deployed in the transit industry, it has become clear to Ubisense that rail yards and maintenance facilities experience similar problems to bus transit facilities.  This has led Ubisense to develop an extension to their award-winning Transit Yard Manager (“TYM”) solution, supporting precision location of engines and cars.  Rail operators can now have complete indoor and outdoor visibility of their yards reducing search times, and providing data on rail yard processes so they can be streamlined, reducing maintenance costs and inventory levels.

The Ubisense solution reliably tracks both the orientation of the engine or car and its location to a precision of 12 inches.  The TYM web based interface provides a simple means to search for specific rolling stock or groups of assets that share similar characteristics.  This reduces the amount of manual time spent documenting their location and provides reliable data to more effectively manage yard operations.

Additionally, TYM now reports on the dwell times of an engine as it moves through maintenance processes allowing managers to be alerted by email or SMS, if a process is taking too long or the correct steps are not followed.  Historical data can also be gathered and used to determine process improvements.  This data is commonly utilized in six sigma or lean manufacturing methodologies to eliminate cost.

Ubisense is installed in several bus transit organizations around the world and is completing its first installation in a large American passenger rail company.

“We are pleased to be able to expand our transit industry solutions to the rail industry,” commented Jay Cadman, VP Sales and Marketing. “Accurate location is driving process improvements for our customers and we anticipate expanding further into other areas such as MRO and terminal solutions by working closely in conjunction with our customers.”

Ubisense precise real-time location deployed with mobile devices for unique 3D audio experience

Cambridge, UK and Montreal, Canada. 28th April 2010. Ubisense announces that their unique award winning 3d precise real-time location solution has been deployed within the "Audio Graffiti" Installation at the 12 Biennial Symposium on Arts and Technology, New London, CT, where mobile users can create and experience a constantly evolving wall of graffiti.

Audio Graffiti no. 2 from Mike Wozniewski on Vimeo.

This unique arts/ science project is a collaboration between the iACT research group at the University of Montreal and the Centre for Intelligent Machines, at McGill University and Ubisense. The installation is set within an indoor “audio augmented” environment, where users can create and explore a continually evolving wall of audio graffiti, by overlaying the wall with audio clips in their precise 3D location.
Users are equipped with wireless headsets including a precise real-time position from Ubisense. The solution enables the users to be precisely tracked as they move around the space. As the user approaches the wall a precise spatial location is registered when one of the programmable buttons on the tag is pressed and a sound clip is recorded and attached to the wall at that position. The sound clips form a 3D audio image of sonic content in space.
Headsets allow the users to listen to the sound clips on the wall. By moving forwards and backwards, towards and away from the wall the user will hear sound clips from a narrower or wider area of the wall, similar to listening to foreground / background noise within a party or restaurant, by moving closer to the wall, the user will be able to “audio zoom” in and listen to an individual, defined sound clip. If the user walks along the wall from side to side, they are able to listen to a series of sound clips. The sound clips appear in the order they have been laid down, and will fade gradually over a period of time.
Created by a team of audio/visual engineers, and artistic director Zack Settel, the project is one of a number of audio-based arts/ science projects concentrating on spatialised audio rendering.
“The Ubisense precise real-time location solution provided us with the perfect vehicle for tracking movement around the wall and the indoor capture of high resolution data.” Commented Artistic Director, Zack Settel.
“We are delighted that we were able to deploy our unique solution at the University of Montreal and McGill University” said Jay Cadman, VP Sales and Marketing, Ubisense, “The Audio Graffiti project is a very sophisticated use of our technology and demonstrates the flexibility of Ubisense solutions.”
